Best Ever Vegan Kit Kat Bars Recipe! (1)

Give me a break. That’s what the famous commercial says about the candy bar. That’s because the iconic chocolate bar has a snap when you break it. I used to love that candy, but I figured those days were behind me. At least until the day they make a vegan version.

I’m not the kind of person to sit around and wait, so I decided to make my own!

Now I’ve learned dipping sugar cookies in chocolate magically transforms them into Homemade Vegan Kit Kat Bars.

If you love this favorite candy bar, here’s a delicious vegan alternative!

What Makes This Recipe Shine?

  • Melting dark chocolate with coconut oil creates a chocolate coating that’s easy to dip cookies in and it still sets firm
  • Using wafer cookies is a great way to keep this treat simple and easy to make
  • Placing the candies in the fridge helps the chocolate set faster, meaning you’ll be eating these treats in no time!

Recipe Ingredients

You can find the full printable recipe, including ingredient quantities, below. But first, here are some explanations of ingredients and steps to help you make this recipe perfect every time.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe:

  • Dairy-free Chocolate Chips
  • Coconut Oil — The coconut oil softens the melted chocolate and gives it a great consistency for dipping. If you don’t like the flavor of coconut, use refined coconut oil
  • Sugar Wafer Cookies — There are many flavor varieties, like peanut butter, vanilla, chocolate, and even strawberry to choose from. See my tips below on finding dairy-free sugar wafers.

How to Make Vegan Kit Kat Bars

It’s easy to make this yummy dark chocolate Kit Kat vegan recipe!

Of course, you can make your own wafers too, but that’s just so much work. Don’t believe me? Watch this pastry chef attempt to make homemade wafers for Kit Kats. I’m worn out just watching it!

  1. Cook chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave until melted. Stir it until it’s combined.
  2. Coat wafer cookies (either whole or cut in half) in the chocolate and set on a tray lined with waxed paper.
  3. Transfer the tray to the fridge to set the chocolate.

Here are more detailed step-by-step instructions:

Step One: Prepare the Chocolate

Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe container and stir in the coconut oil, making sure all the chips are coated. Microwave for 22 seconds, then stir. Then microwave for 11 seconds and stir. Repeat until the chocolate is melted.

Step Two: Dip Wafers in Chocolate

Then grab one of the sugar wafers and use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate over the cookie, until it is thoroughly coated. Place it on the waxed paper. Continue this process until you’re either out of chocolate, or cookies, or you have all the kit kat bars you need.

Marly’s Tips

For bite-sized Kit Kat treats, cut the wafer cookies in half before dipping them.

Step Three: Allow the Chocolate to Set

Next, the chocolate needs to set. You can either place the cookie sheet full of chocolate-covered bars on the counter at room temperature or place it in the fridge until the chocolate has hardened. The fridge will speed up this process greatly.

That’s all it takes to make homemade vegan kit kats. Do your best not to eat them all at once!

Frequently-Asked Questions

Why is it Called a Kit Kat?

There is a history to the use of the term Kit Kat. It was referred to as cake served at a political meeting at a club called the Kit-Kat. The owner must have thought the name was catchy because it was used to launch a line of chocolates. Learn more about the history of the Kit Kat Bar.

Are Kit Kats Vegan?

The typical store-bought Kit Kat Bars are made with milk chocolate, and that’s not vegan. There are some varieties of milk chocolate that are made with plant-based milk, but the milk chocolate used in Kit Kats has dairy in it. However, you can make your own homemade vegan kit kats.

Are Dark Chocolate Kit Kats Dairy Free?

It’s truly disappointing that the Dark Chocolate Kit Kat bars are not dairy-free. That’s because even the dark chocolate used by Hershey’s is made with dairy. Let’s hope someday they’ll make the easy switch to remove dairy in their dark chocolate. I believe it’s on their radar because they are now making dairy-free chocolate chips.

Storage Tips

I recommend storing these in the fridge to keep them fresh longer and to keep the chocolate crispy. They will keep up to 10 days in the fridge. They can also be frozen for up to 2 months.

Dairy-Free Sugar Wafers

Many of you have asked how to find dairy-free sugar wafers, so I thought I’d leave some links to my favorite products. I’m lucky that I can find these in my local grocery store, but it’s always nice to have an online resource for favorite products too!

These Voortman Bakery Vanilla Wafers (paid link) are a favorite of mine. The grocery store near my home has these with a peanut butter filling that is so good! But the vanilla flavor is great too and tastes amazing dipped in chocolate!

I also like these Biscos Creme Filled Sugar Wafers (paid link). Of course, anything dipped in chocolate is pretty good, but the crisp in a sugar wafer is the best!

Finally, Keebler is always a favorite when it comes to sugar wafers. Keebler sugar wafers (paid link) come in a variety of flavors too, like strawberry, chocolate, and even vanilla. So, it’s nice to try the different flavors.
