Sushi’s the best. It’s tasty, it’s healthy, and it makes you look super-sophisticated. If you do it right, that is. If you do it wrong, you can look like a right clown, and no one wants that.

Now you may be thinking, “How can you do it wrong? Just stick it in your mouth and chew, right?”

Well, yes and no. Did you know that there’s a right and a wrong way to dip your sushi into soy sauce?

I’m not actually that crazy about soy sauce on my sushi (don’t @ me), but if I were to have a little, I’d always dip the rice part of the sushi into that cute little soy sauce pot.

But that’s where I’d end up looking like said-clown.

According to Chef Seki the owner and head chef at Sushi Seki in New York, you are actually supposed to dip either the fish/prawn part, or the nori (the seaweed that’s wrapped around the outside). He suggests doing this so as to avoid over-saturating your sushi roll with soy sauce, as the rice is more absorbent, and you could end up with way more soy sauce than you bargained for.

“The etiquette of using soy sauce is not to ruin the balance of flavours by over dipping,” he told Insider.

“Normally, chefs try to give you the perfect balance to enhance the flavours of the fish and the texture of the rice, so trust them.”

He also recommends using a piece of pickled ginger to add a dash of soy sauce. Simply dip the ginger into the soy sauce, then use that to brush a little on your sushi. Think of it as a tasty little paintbrush.
